TC Works TC Tools 2.0 by J. Arif Verner The new version of TC Works’ TC Tools Version 2.0 ($999 list; $199 upgrade) is a significant upgrade. The program includes reverbs, chorus/delay and parametric equalization. Each of these processors is accessed from the TDM menu as a separate plug-in. Depending upon the amount of DSP power in the user’s system, all modules can be functional at the same time on multiple tracks. Based upon the user’s plug-in routings, the modules may feed in and out of each other. Features Algorithms in TC Tools are graphically displayed on one screen. Each screen consists of function blocks for the main parameters. For example, the reverb decay/frequency is shown as a block diagram. Below the block are two horizontal sliders setting the crossover points between three frequency ranges. As the sliders are moved, the block changes shape, color and size. To the right are three vertical sliders. These set the individual decay times for each of the three frequency ranges. When parameters are changed, the results may affect more than one diagram block. TC Reverb is based on two of the algorithms from the company’s M5000 digital audio mainframe. The graphic editing parameters include four main function blocks and several miscellaneous parameters. Unique to TC Reverb is the space editor, which defines the basic room type and early reflection patterns. Six different shapes are available, including Hall, which simulates the Boston Symphony Hall, and Prism, which is based on the golden ratio pattern. TC Tools provides 33 factory presets covering a variety of room sizes, ambiences and vocal effects. TC Chorus attempts to re-create the sound of the classic TC Electronic 1210 spatial expander. Parameter settings include filters, delays, LFO, feedback (both positive and negative) and a modulation graph. This semicircular graph provides a visual illustration of the relationship between the speed and the depth of the effect. Twelve presets include delays, chorus and flanging. In use New to TC Tools 2.0 is TC EQ. This algorithm is a five-band EQ: three parametric bands, along with a low- and high-shelf band. Signals may be boosted or cut by 18 dB. Bandwidth, frequency and gain are all selectable per band. The total frequency range covers 19.95 Hz to 20 kHz. TC EQ also employs an adjustable SoftSat function. SoftSat simulates the warmth often associated with analog equipment. The 19 presets handle vocal enhancers, hum reduction, frequency boosts/cuts and special effects. Summary Ergonomically, TC Tools presents a logical and intuitive interface. There is no learning curve whatsoever. The best part of the program, however, is the diverse collection of effects. TC Tools is a real Swiss army knife. If the job is mixing, mastering or tracking, TC Tools will do it. TC Tools is distributed by Digidesign 650-842-7999. J.
